The Ultimate Guide to E-Bike Laws in NSW: 500W vs. 250W Explained

Are you confused by the electric bike laws in New South Wales? You aren't alone.

With so many conflicting opinions online and a flood of cheap, imported e-bikes hitting the market, it is completely normal to feel anxious about accidentally purchasing an illegal bike. Nobody wants to invest their hard-earned money only to face heavy fines or have their bike confiscated by the police.

At EWHIP, we believe in absolute transparency. We want you to ride with 100% confidence. Here is the straightforward, no-nonsense breakdown of what makes an e-bike street legal in NSW today, and what is changing in the near future.

The Current Rule: The NSW 500W Exception Currently,

New South Wales is unique. While most of Australia strictly enforces a 250W limit, NSW law permits electric power-assisted cycles with a maximum continuous rated power of up to 500W on public roads.

However, to be street legal, a 500W e-bike must strictly adhere to the following rules:

Speed Limits: The motor must automatically cut off when the bicycle reaches a speed of 25 km/h, or when you stop pedalling.

Throttle Restrictions: Any throttle or "walk assist" feature must cut out at exactly 6 km/h.

Pedal Power: The motor cannot be the only source of propulsion; you must primarily propel the bike using the pedals.

If a retailer tries to sell you a 500W bike with a throttle that powers the bike above 6 km/h without pedalling, it is illegal for public road use and can only be ridden on private property.

The Future: The Shift to EN15194 and the 250W Limit

The laws are shifting rapidly to align with European safety standards. From February 1st, 2026, all e-bikes sold in NSW must be electrically certified. Furthermore, NSW is reinstating the strict European safety standard, EN15194. This means the maximum legal power output for new e-bikes will be reduced from 500W back down to 250W.

What if you already own a 500W e-bike?

Don't panic. The government has announced a three-year grandfathering (exemption) period for existing e-bikes that were compliant with NSW rules when you purchased them. By 2029, police will be checking bikes to ensure they meet the EN15194 standard.
